successful completion of Adobe InDesign Masterclass

i am excited to announce that i've just wrapped up my Adobe InDesign Masterclass, achieving a much coveted personal milestone.

an enthusiast of stringently structured documents, i consider layout a basic essential of written text—right alongside correct spelling and typography. thoughtfully layouted documents increase readability, guiding the reader through the text, supporting scanning, and boosting comprehension and reading speed.

Adobe InDesign has long been the industry standard for professional desktop publishing and layout design. knowing my way around Adobe InDesign now allows me to seamlessly blend my writing and translation skills with the sophisticated graphic-design features Adobe InDesign provides, with the complete Adobe product suite readily available at my fingertips.

the fabulous online InDesign Masterclass, offered by the German Online-Schule für Gestaltung (OfG), consisted of a total of 3 modules, each concluding with a marked and rated final assignment. my completed assignments are shown below.*

module 1—print

the first assignment was to create a 6-page flyer in parallel fold, including type area (margins and columns), font-size compatible baseline grid, shortened panels, correct imposition, layers, linked text fields, and a table, delivered as packaged InDesign files, including links and fonts, and a print PDF.

module 2—automation

module 2 concluded with designing a personalized invitation for an annually recurring event. the inner right side included an automatically personalized salutation using the data merge feature, which allows linking a structured data source, such as a CSV file, to a design template. the invitation was to also make use of master pages, paragraph, character, and object formats as well as text variables.

module 3

completion of module 3 required development of an interactive A4 magazine exported both as a fixed-layout EPUB and using Adobe InDesign Publish Online. The document was to be built on a robust baseline grid and structured using layers, predefined formats, master pages with text variables, and an interactive table of contents. It was to feature animated image and text objects, interactive buttons, external hyperlinks, and a video object, ensuring the correct working color space and transparency flattening were applied.

the topic i envisaged for this magazine was to encapsulate what i consider the seven Cs of medical writing, i.e., correctness, clarity, compositional structure, consistency, concision, compliance, and customization. while the magazine currently contains placeholder text only, i hope to soon find the time to elaborate on each of these principles.
